Alaskan Yellow Cedar Picnic Tables
In the 1970s old growth Alaskan yellow cedar (AYC) was used to make picnic tables for North Cascades National Park by the Youth Conservation Corps. AYC is famed for its aromatic properties and resistance to rot. Over 40 years, the footings rotted away with the rest of the wood being preserved. Darrington community members salvaged the picnic tables to be used for community and youth projects. Snohomish County juvenile detention youth helped take the tables apart. Ben Rankin and Mayor Dan Rankin refurbished two of the tables for the fundraiser of Glacier Peak Institute to support connect youth with the outdoors.

Native Blackberry Pie - V
In the summer, Darrington heads onto the surrounding slopes to pick the native blackberries, going through thickets and spending hours in the hot sun to return home with a handful of the native blackberry to bake pies with. This is not a normal blackberry. If you take the flavor of the blackberries bought at stores or picked alongside most roads, then concentrated it into a more intense blackberry flavor, you would end up with the vibrant native mountain blackberry (rubus ursinus). This pie is a culinary and cultural experience.
Warning: after eating this blackberry pie, all others will taste bland.
