In the 1970s old growth Alaskan yellow cedar (AYC) was used to make picnic tables for North Cascades National Park by the Youth Conservation Corps. AYC is famed for its aromatic properties and resistance to rot. Over 40 years, the footings rotted away with the rest of the wood being preserved. Darrington community members salvaged the picnic tables to be used for community and youth projects. Snohomish County juvenile detention youth helped take the tables apart. Ben Rankin and Mayor Dan Rankin refurbished two of the tables for the fundraiser of Glacier Peak Institute to support connect youth with the outdoors.

Spend an afternoon learning to pan for gold in the Sauk-Suiattle rivers or finding chantrelles in the mountains around Darrington. Jason grew up playing in the rivers and forests. He enjoys exploring streams and forests looking for the best gold panning and gold mushroom sites. This is best scheduled for the early fall after the fire season has wound down and when the chantrelles begin to show. Jason volunteers in his free time with Glacier Peak Institute helping with robotics to mushroom picking.
